I have been working with young athletes for the last 11 years. Guiding them into a program, focused on proper form and led through motivational coaching. I have been an Elite athlete for the last 16 years. I have been a 3x world champion in karate and a CrossFit games athlete as well as an Olympic weightlifter, competing internationally for the last 15 years . I have competed at 3 common wealth games, world champs and held the youth commonwealth record.
Many questions get asked when children and young adults begin strength and conditioning training.
- Is Weight training safe for a youngster? Yes it is … as long as he/she is doing so with proper form and led by a qualified coach who can guide them and ensure they aren’t going to “heavy” with the weight. Strength training increases bone density which will help him/her develop into a strong, well rounded athlete.
- At what age can my child start training? As young as 6 years old … with a young child you work purely on form and skill development. As he/she gets older and stronger the exercises will slowly increase.
- Does Olympic lifting make me slow? Absolutely not … it actually makes you fast and explosive (if you do the lifts properly and use the correct muscles) fast twitch fibers get activated here.
In conclusion, we are here to help teach proper technique so that as they develop their athletic skills, they are more likely to excel and less likely to get injured because proper form has been established.
